Tri-County Regional Jail is the operative local jail for Champaign County. It serves Champaign, Madison, and Union Counties through the Tri-County Corrections Commission. The Champaign County Sheriff directs arrest and inmate questions to this separate regional facility. That split affects record ownership: Tri-County keeps the jail custody and booking material, while the arresting agency may keep the incident record and the Champaign courts keep the case entries.
A person may return to the community after bond, recognizance, dismissal, sentence completion, or another court order. A departure can also mean transfer to the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction, another county jail, West Central Community Correctional Facility, the U.S. Marshals Service, or ICE. Hospital movement and court-ordered electronic monitoring create still other outcomes. Death and escape are custody changes, not ordinary releases. Request the release disposition and destination before using the word “released.”

Confirm a Tri-County Release
The official roster is titled “Persons Currently In Custody.” Its 30-minute refresh describes how often current data changes, not how long a released record remains online. No release-date field, historical archive, or official 24-hour or 72-hour release list was found. A missing name can reflect release, transfer, spelling differences, lag, or the wrong facility.
- Search the current Tri-County roster by name after completing its security check.
- If the person is listed, treat the result as current custody at that facility.
- If absent, search VINE for an affirmative custody event and inspect both Champaign court dockets.
- Call Tri-County with the full name, booking number, and approximate dates. Ask whether the person was released or transferred.
- Obtain the release sheet and follow any destination into DRC, another jail, WCCCF, USMS, or ICE.

Tri-County Release Record Fields
Ask for an existing booking/release sheet or jail-register entry. Give the full name, booking number if known, approximate admission and release interval, originating agency, and case number. No official source published a special release-record fee, a fixed public retention period, or a guaranteed response time. Ohio’s public-records law permits actual-cost copies and requires copies within a reasonable period, subject to exemptions. If a field is withheld, ask for the legal authority and a segregable public version. If Tri-County is not custodian of a requested record, ask which office likely keeps it.

Tri-County Court Release Chain
Municipal Court covers countywide misdemeanors, traffic cases, and early felony events. Common Pleas supplies the adult-felony disposition. A felony may begin in Municipal Court and proceed in Common Pleas, so checking just one docket can miss the order that explains a transfer or later release. Retrieve journal entries rather than relying solely on a case summary.
Bond entries, dismissal, jail credit, sentence, commitment, community control, judicial release, and termination each answer a legal question. None alone proves the minute the person left the building. Compare the relevant entry to Tri-County’s completed date and time. A closed case can coexist with another hold, while an open case can continue after a valid bond release.
Property at Tri-County Release
The inmate handbook says admission property is stored in a secure area and may be released with a facility form. Clothing cannot be given away when that would leave the person without clothes to wear on release. At departure, the person signs the property inventory to confirm that nothing is missing. That inventory is part of release processing, not evidence of the court’s disposition.
Transfer property needs special care. If a receiving institution refuses it, the person must designate someone to collect it and provide a contact number. After contact, Tri-County holds it for up to seven days. Unclaimed property may then be destroyed or donated. Families should confirm the permitted pickup person, timing, and identification directly with the jail.
Tri-County Release Time Logistics
The handbook does not publish a fixed release time, exit door, family waiting point, weekend or holiday procedure, transport service, or gate payment. Eligible inmate workers may receive court-approved time off a sentence, while serious disciplinary violations may cause loss of earned good time. The handbook gives no universal formula. Tri-County Release Notifications
Tri-County’s VINE instructions describe release, transfer, escape, return after escape or re-arrest, and death as reportable custody changes. Search the Ohio service by name and ID, confirm the participating facility, and open the matching record. VINE is an alert feed. It does not replace the release sheet, and city jail facilities are expressly outside the local coverage statement. Always preserve the precise event wording and the time received.
Telephone registration is available at 800-770-0192. Register each phone number separately and choose a four-digit PIN. When a call arrives, enter the PIN to acknowledge it. Calls may continue for 24 hours or until acknowledgment. Keep the PIN private because it controls the notification loop, not the inmate identity.
Tri-County Record Access Limits
Ohio Revised Code 149.43 governs prompt inspection and reasonable-time copies for public records, with valid exclusions. Identity and intended use generally cannot be demanded. Redactions should be marked, and a denial must give an explanation and legal authority. An office must offer help revising an ambiguous or overbroad request.
Juvenile, sealed, expunged, confidential investigation, victim-image, probation, and parole material may be restricted. Sealing can change public access, but a missing online result does not prove a sealing order or nonexistence. Ask for the narrow fields that establish the custody event, and rely on the record creator for current status.
